The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), located on the upper and outer surface of the frontal lobe, connects with the parietal cortex, thalamus, and basal ganglia to coordinate working memory, attention regulation, planning, and cognitive flexibility. Neurons in this region allow us to hold information in our minds and manipulate it, and apply it to solve complex problems aswell as organise complex ideas, and direct our attention toward long term goals. It is the foundation of higher order reasoning and disciplined study.
For me the dlPFC reflects the way I approach my academic journey in biomedicine. It powers my ability to break down neuroscience concepts into clear steps, stay organised in my documentation during clinical placement, and maintain focus when preparing for exams. Just as the dlPFC integrates information to guide goal‑directed behaviour, it mirrors my own strengths in structured learning, analytical thinking, and persistence. This region embodies the discipline and curiosity that drive my academic path toward a carrer in neuroscience.
